Asbestos cleanup a short-term distraction for Lincoln

STOCKTON - Lincoln High School has taken precautions for its athletic teams after trace amounts of asbestos were discovered in the boys and girls locker rooms, principal Debbie Holmerud said in an e-mail Wednesday night.

"These areas are being cleaned from top to bottom by the asbestos contractor, including the ceilings, floors, all flat surfaces and air ducts," Holmerud stated.

As a result, the No. 5 Trojans (4-3, 2-0 San Joaquin Athletic Association) and Bear Creek (1-6, 0-2) won't be able to use the locker rooms. Lincoln coach Jim Rubiales said his players will have to dress at home or in another building on campus, and the Bruins will dress at Bear Creek before busing to Alex G. Spanos Stadium.

The asbestos was found Monday in the construction area of a new campus gymnasium, scheduled to open next fall.

After the discovery, the school took precautions by moving Tuesday's volleyball game to nearby Sierra Middle School. Tests of the gymnasium and its entrance came back asbestos-free, and the Lincoln volleyball team hosted a match against Lodi on Thursday.

Holmerud expects the cleaning to be complete by Tuesday.

West sympathy

If one person can sympathize with the McNair football program, it's West's Steve Lopez.

Lopez coached West's first varsity team in 1994 and guided the senior-less squad to a 2-8 record, 0-8 in the Valley Oak League. No. 3 West (4-3, 2-0 Tri-City Athletic League) will host the Eagles (0-7, 0-2) tonight.

"It was really rough that first year," Lopez said. "We only had a varsity team and a sophomore team.It gets better.

"You want to start off doing things the right way, and I think they are."

In its fourth varsity season, West finished as the Sac-Joaquin Section Division II runner-up. Last fall, the Wolf Pack took second place in the Division I tournament.

State bowl outlook

No. 2 St. Mary's (4-2, 2-0 TCAL) is the only area school that has a legitimate chance qualifying for one of the three California Interscholastic Federation State Bowl games to be played Dec. 16 in Carson.

Six schools (three from Northern California and three from Southern California) are selected for a small-, medium- and large-school game. The 10 CIF section commissioners will vote on the participants Dec. 10.

In the CalHiSports.com rankings, St. Mary's is fourth behind Del Oro (6-1), Colfax (7-0) and Novato (6-1).

Because of enrollment, the Rams are in the Division II (medium school) category, even though they are a D-I team in the Sac-Joaquin Section.

Teams must win their section championship to be considered for the state bowl game.

Client Testimonial

To Whom It May Concern:

I lost my husband to mesothelioma. At the time I was devastated! I found myself without any real support or assistance. It was my good fortune, however, that my husband's former co-worker referred me to the Law Offices of Clapper, Patti, Schweizer & Mason

Not only did I find them unsurpassed in the area of law as it pertained to my case, but I will never forget the compassion and caring of Jack Clapper and every member of his staff that was extended to me at a time when I needed it most. The attention and assistance they gave me was what I sorely needed. I always had the assurance that my well-being was a high priority with them, and they lived up to my high expectations.

Words cannot express my high regard for this firm. Despite the intervening years, I continue to regard them as friends, and I cannot say enough in praise of how they persevered on my behalf.

If ever anyone needed the assistance of a dedicated and committed law firm, they could never find anyone of higher integrity and greater dedication. I'm so thankful these wonderful people were there for me!

Respectfully,
Esther Cobb
