DES MOINES, Iowa -- Some Valley High School parents said they have been kept in the dark about asbestos removal.
The school said asbestos has been detected in a part of the building they plan to tear down this spring.
The asbestos must be removed so the toxic material won't get in the air
during demolition. Parents said the plan is dangerous and has been kept
hush-hush.
Officials said the plan is not a secret and that all students will be safe.
"It's a highly regulated activity, so we will
take steps above and beyond what's required to meet the standards and
assure not only our students are safe, but our staff is safe, too,"
said Chief Financial Officer Kurt Subra.
"It's a surprise, and I think it's dangerous. I
think we should have had warning or they should have done it in the
summer when nobody was in school," said Valley High School parent
Andrea Murphy.
The removal will begin during winter break and continue through spring semester.
A public meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Oct. 31 at the Valley High School media center.
