Widower compensated for asbestos claim6th, October 2006 A 76-year-old widower, Terry Tobin, has been awarded compensation after his wife Dorothy died from the asbestos related lung cancer, mesotheliomaAs a young woman, Dorothy washed her father's and brother's work clothes without realising she was inhaling tiny fibres of asbestos. The two men worked at the Turner and Newalls asbestos factory in Cardiff and were also unaware that they were coming into contact with poisonous materials. In 1969 Dorothy's father, Jim Pottinger, died after developing an asbestos related disease and in 1999 her brother Jack died from mesothelioma. Dorothy's sister, Beryl, also came into contact with asbestos on her father's clothing and passed away from an associated disease. Mr Tobin said: "It was just such a tragedy to see my wife die of a disease after her father, brother and sister had all died of it before her. I just wanted somebody to take responsibility." Mr Tobin became one of the first to successfully make an asbestos claim against Turner and Newalls which could lead the way for other asbestosis and mesothelioma sufferers to claim personal injury compensation. |
