G.B. 61, U.S. Marine/County Sheriff
G.B. called our offices from his home in California after having
been diagnosed with malignant pleural mesothelioma. We spoke with him,
and determined the sources of his exposure.
First, G.B. came into contact with asbestos while serving in the
Marines from 1957 until 1976. He went through boot camp in San Diego,
and infantry training at Camp Pendelton. G.B. became a communications
specialist, and served in Vietnam in the 1960s.
After retiring from the Marines, G.B. worked in the sheriff's
department in Stanislaus County, California. In the jail where G.B.
worked, there was asbestos pipe covering the walls, exposing G.B. to
asbestos on a daily basis. G.B. also performed many brake jobs on his
own cars throughout his lifetime.
We filed suit in San Francisco against the manufacturers of the
asbestos products that G.B. was exposed to in the Marines, as a
sheriff's deputy, and against the brake manufacturers. We developed
evidence showing which companies had supplied the asbestos insulation
to the pipe wells in the jail where G.B. worked, and that G.B. had to
inspect the pipe wells periodically. Because of this evidence, all of
the asbestos companies we were suing settled during trial.
