Mesothelioma Overview

Asbestos Exposure Sites

Most people were exposed to asbestos fibers on the job or in the workplace in what is known as occupational exposure. Some of the industries that are a source of asbestos exposure are factories, shipyards, power plants, oil refineries, steel manufacturing plants, and any company or job site involved with building materials.

Typical sites where asbestos exposure occurs are:

  • Manufacturing plants for asbestos products (insulation, roofing, building, materials)
  • Vehicle repair shops (brakes & clutches)
  • Construction sites
  • Aboard ships
  • Mining operations / mines
  • Oil refineries
  • Power plants
  • Railroad roundhouses
  • Shipyards
  • Steel mills

Another form of exposure is called take-home exposure. This form of asbestos exposure occurs when someone who has been exposed in the workplace wears work clothes home. The family member is exposed to asbestos dust or fibers from the worker's clothing. Family members that are exposed in this way are exposed to smaller amounts, but are still at risk.
