Mesothelioma Attorneys Support Fundraiser for Lung Cancer Research

October 14, 2011

From PR News, Mesothelioma Attorneys Support Fundraiser for Lung Cancer Research

For the past 30 years, Jack Clapper, founding attorney for Clapper Patti Schweizer & Mason, has been exclusively representing clients suffering from a particularly rare and fatal type of lung cancer caused by asbestos exposure called malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM). To date, standard treatments for this type of lung cancer have not been very effective and there is no cure- many diagnosed do not survive the year.

Like all the partners at the firm, Clapper searches for ways to participate in fundraisers that support studies exploring better treatments for mesothelioma and other types of lung cancer. The next local fundraiser is the Porsche Race Car Classic held at Quail Lodge in Carmel, CA this coming Sunday, October 16, 2011. All net proceeds from the ticket sales to this event will go directly to the UCSF Thoracic Oncology Program and the Bonnie J. Addario Lung Cancer Foundation.

Lung cancer statistics are staggering, and the need for on-going research crucial. Lung cancer is the leading cause of all other cancer deaths (more than breast, prostate, colon, liver, melanoma and kidney cancers combined) and yet receives the least amount of funding. Nearly twenty people in the United States die each hour from lung cancer, and approximately 3,000 people each year are diagnosed with mesothelioma. Mesothelioma is a global cancer and current concern due to the historical widespread use of asbestos containing materials, long latency period between time of exposure and development of symptoms, and continued use in less developed parts of the world.

The UCSF Thoracic Oncology Program has doctors who specialize in mesothelioma treatment, beginning with goal of finding ways to diagnose the cancer in early stages. One particular area being studied by V. Courtney Broaddus, MD, Professor in the Department of Medicine and Associate Director of the Lung Biology Center at UCSF, is how apoptosis, the process of cell death, can be used to slow or stop the progression of mesothelioma tumor growth. The Thoracic Oncology Program at UCSF is dedicated to conquering lung cancer and provided the highest of patient care and treatment.

The Bonnie J. Addario Lung Cancer Foundation also has the mission of raising awareness and money for lung cancer research, connecting leaders in the field, scientists, researchers and physicians worldwide with the goal of finding better treatment options. They support all efforts to find ways to survival rates through early detection, genetic testing, and drug discovery.

Join with CPSM and the other expected 3,500 guests in the fight against mesothelioma and all types of lung cancer. Come enjoy beautiful Carmel, view classic Porsche cars, hear the history of Porsche racing direct from the drivers themselves, sample local gourmet food and wines – all with the collective intention of improving the outcomes of those at risk of and/or diagnosed with lung cancer and helping save lives.
