Asbestos Bankruptcy Trust for Artra Group, Inc.

Artra Group, Inc.
Artra Asbestos Settlement Trust
Filed 2007

An asbestos bankruptcy trust was filed for in 2007 for Artra Group, Inc., under the name Artra Asbestos Settlement Trust. Asbestos bankruptcy trusts are typically set up so that people who become victims of asbestos exposure can potentially obtain financial compensation for any illness incurred as a result of such exposure, including mesothelioma.

In 1975, Artra acquired Synkoloid, a manufacturer of paint and related products. The acquisition made Artra responsible for all of Synkoloid's liabilities that arose after 1962. Because Synkoloid manufactured products that contained asbestos, the liabilities that Artra became responsible for resulting from the agreement were massive. By the end of 2000, the company was a defendant in asbestos-related lawsuits involving over 46,000 plaintiffs and by 2002, it had declared bankruptcy (uscourts.gov). The trust was established after confirmation of the Chapter 11 Join Plan of Reorganization.
