In 1975, Artra acquired Synkoloid, a manufacturer of paint and related products. The acquisition made Artra responsible for all of Synkoloid's liabilities that arose after 1962. By the end of 2000, the company was a defendant in asbestos-related lawsuits involving over 46,000 plaintiffs and by 2002, it had declared bankruptcy (uscourts.gov). The trust was established after confirmation of the Chapter 11 Join Plan of Reorganization.
