Automotive Products Containing Asbestos

image of car brakesBecause asbestos was used widely in the automotive industry before it was regulated, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) released a brochure entitled, Current Best Practices for Preventing Asbestos Exposure among Brake and Clutch Repair Workers in 2007. Some automotive brakes and clutches in use today still contain asbestos.

Both professional automotive technicians and home mechanics that repair and replace automotive brakes and clutches should be made aware of the risks of being exposed to asbestos. Asbestos dust can be released when a brake disk, drum, clutch cover or wheel is removed from a car, truck, or other equipment for maintenance, repair or replacement. Even though the asbestos fibers in the dust are so fine that they cannot be seen by the naked eye, they can still cause fatal diseases, such as mesothelioma and asbestosis, years after the exposure.

It is estimated that over 160,000 mechanics in the U.S. alone have been potentially exposed to asbestos during repair and replacement of brakes and brake components. Mechanics, however, are not the only group of people who may be exposed to asbestos through brakes. It is also possible for others who have handled the brakes to have become exposed as well. This may include assembly-line workers, junkyard operators, and those who maintain their own machinery. If you have known or suspected exposure to asbestos and are diagnosed with mesothelioma, you have a right to file a mesothelioma lawsuit and receive compensation from the manufacturers of the products that caused your cancer.
