Mar 30, 2010 - Asbestos Delays Investigation of Church Fire
Investigations into a fire that began in a historic church in San Jose last week has been delayed after the discovery of material that may contain asbestos. Asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral that was once widely used in many construction materials and is now known to be highly toxic.
Exposure to airborne asbestos can cause a deadly disease called mesothelioma. There is a high likelihood of exposure to asbestos occurring during and immediately after a fire in structures built before the mid 1980’s. Firefighters are aware of this risk, and take precautions if they suspect asbestos on site.
When the firefighters responded to the alarm, they discovered pipe insulation that had been disturbed by the fire which they suspected contained asbestos. The stopped investigations and alerted the property owner, who must hire a certified asbestos inspector and take any remedial actions necessary to ensure that the building is safe for the firefighters to enter.
The original church was built in 1903, but has been abandoned for some time. Firefighters were investigating not only to find out the cause, but also to make sure there were no victims inside, as the place has a history of homeless people staying there.
Firefighters will resume their efforts as soon as threat of exposure to asbestos has been cleared. Firefighters are at an increased risk of being exposed to asbestos. If you or someone you know has been diagnosed with mesothelioma, consult with an oncologist as soon as possible. Also, because mesothelioma is an aggressive cancer, do not hesitate to contact a mesothelioma attorney who only handles asbestos lawsuits so that your chances of getting financial help to cover costs of treatment are highest.
