Mar 30, 2010 - Asbestos Inspector Pleads Guilty to Violations
Saverio Todaro was a lead and asbestos inspector responsible for testing residences and building structures for toxic substances before any construction or demolition could be performed. Asbestos inspectors are certified to identify any asbestos containing materials at properties about to undergo construction, renovation or demolition so that the contaminated products can be removed prior to any work being done in order to protect workers from getting mesothelioma.
Asbestos is a highly toxic mineral that, when inhaled, can cause mesothelioma, an incurable form of cancer. When asbestos containing materials are disturbed or damaged, deadly fibers can be released into the air and inhaled or ingested. Decades later, mesothelioma, a cancer in the lining of the lungs, heart or abdomen develops. Because of the known hazards, regulations exist that require certified inspectors to inspect buildings, particularly those built before the mid 1980’s, for asbestos.
Saverio Todaro was supposed to inspect such buildings, but allegedly he never even visited the sites. He is accused of falsifying reports that show buildings were clear of asbestos, when in fact he never actually performed any inspections. His violations of the Toxic Substances Control Act and EPA environmental regulations may have exposed many to asbestos.
This is the first case in which criminal charges are being filed for such violations. Todaro’s sentencing is scheduled for June 28.
