Aug 27, 2008 - Erie County, New York Receives $1.2 Million to Settle Asbestos Lawsuit
Celotex, once a major manufacturer and distributor of asbestos-containing construction materials, and Carey Canada, a Celotex subsidiary, mined and distributed asbestos until 1986. In 1990, both companies filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy because of thousands of asbestos-related injury lawsuits from property owners and individuals who have found asbestos-containing products in their buildings.
According to mesothelioma attorneys, inhaled asbestos fibers, which are odorless and tasteless, can result in asbestos-related disease such as pleural mesothelioma, a potentially terminal disease of the lungs.
Although Erie County is receiving a $1.2 million settlement, authorities believe it is insufficient to abate all the asbestos that caused the problem. Asbestos abatement is costly and requires careful professional service.
