Jan 24, 2010 - Fire Department Asbestos Roof Emergency
The Colusa Fire Department in California has their own emergency: the 45 year old roof is collapsing due to age and the recent weather, and it contains asbestos. Most buildings built at the time of the fire station used asbestos in their construction and roofing materials since it was so well known to be fire and heat resistant and very insulating.
The main emergency with the roof collapsing now is making sure that no one gets exposed to any asbestos. Asbestos, when inhaled or ingested, can cause serious diseases such as mesothelioma, asbestosis and lung cancer. Firefighters are already at a higher risk occupationally of being exposed and developing mesothelioma so safety around removing and replacing the falling roof is vital.
Jan McClintock, the city manager, is seeking the help of state government officials to receive funding to replace the roof. Removal of the roof is estimated to cost up to $500,000 due to the necessity to follow state and federal safety requirements when removing and replacing asbestos containing materials. Colusa city officials are hoping to get at least half of the cost covered by emergency grant funds.
