Nov 4, 2008 - November Is Lung Cancer Awareness Month
The British Journal of Industrial Medicine reports that firefighters are more likely to experience chronic respiratory morbidity as a result of occupational exposure to asbestos and other toxic materials during fire-fighting episodes. Asbestos, a fireproof and virtually indestructible mineral used in floor and ceiling tiles, insulation, brake linings, pipe insulation and other products, is dangerous when disturbed by fire or explosion. When inhaled, asbestos fibers cause mesothelioma, asbestosis and other lung diseases.
Asbestos attorneys caution that the most serious of these chronic lung diseases, mesothelioma, is an incurable cancer difficult to treat. Symptoms include chronic, painful cough and difficulty breathing. It is usually not diagnosed for many years after exposure, but it is important for at-risk workers to have medical testing early, and to wear the protective SCBA gear during firefighting.
