A study of medical and death records shows that people who lived within ten miles of the mine have a 12-fold increase in the risk of developing malignant mesothelioma and other lung diseases.
When asbestos fibers are inhaled they can cause mesothelioma, an incurable cancer of the lung. The fear is that construction companies and road crews might have use asbestos waste rock that contains some of the dangerous asbestos fibers, but more information is needed. In the meantime the public is urged to stay away from the abandoned mine because of the asbestos-containing rock. The mine site is a favorite location for all-terrain vehicles, which disturb the site and potentially cause asbestos fibers to become airborne.
