Clinical trials are studies that help researchers test new or improved medicines, procedures, or treatments for mesothelioma. At some point, almost all new treatments undergo clinical trials to test how effective they are compared to standard mesothelioma treatments. For example, radiation therapy for malignant peritoneal mesothelioma was tested in clinical trials before being accepted as a treatment standard.
In some clinical trials, patients involved in the study are assigned to the new treatment, the standard treatment, or a placebo. If patients do not know which mesothelioma treatment they are receiving, this is called a “blind” study. This helps researchers determine the effectiveness of the new treatment. However, it is extremely rare for mesothelioma patients to receive only placebo treatment. When clinical trials are proven to be as or more effective as standard mesothelioma treatment AND offer additional benefits, such as fewer side effects, they may be released as a new treatment available to everyone.
